| In 1995 the National Trust for
Scotland purchased the Mar Lodge Estate. The quality of the
landscape has been recognised by the inclusion of the whole
estate within the Cairngorm Mountain and Deeside and Lochnagar
National Scenic Areas.
The estate has some of the best arctic-alpine flora in Britain
and although restricted by the acidic granite geology, is
important for plants including alpine speedwell (Veronica
alpina). Habitats of European importance include Caledonian
forest, wet and dry heaths, and montane acid grassland. The
Caledonian pinewoods have characteristic species such as twinflower
(Linnaea borealis).
Significant mammal species include red squirrel, otter and
water vole, and notable breeding birds include golden eagle,
peregrine falcon, dotterel and snow bunting.
The architectural importance of the estate is reflected in
that there are 5 listed buildings including Mar Lodge which
was built in 1895 by the Duke of Fife. This has recently been
converted into holiday flats and retains many of the grand
features of its heyday as a hunting lodge. The ballroom has
a spectacular 2,435 red deer stags heads lining the walls
and ceiling!
The estate is managed to conserve its landscape, archaeology,
buildings, wildlife, and to provide public benefit through
access and conservation. Current work includes reducing red
deer numbers in order to promote the natural regeneration
of native Caledonian pine woodland and improving the existing
forestry plantations for wildlife by removing fences and non-native
trees. Fences are a major hazard for capercaillie and black
grouse and cause a significant number of deaths through birds
flying into fences.
With 15 Munros the estate is popular for walking and climbing
in summer and ski touring and ice climbing in winter. The
National Trust for Scotland has adopted the 'The Long Walk
In' principle and has a policy of open public access on foot.
The estate continues its long sporting tradition with red
and roe deer stalking and red grouse shooting.
A Ranger Service has been established to inform and assist
the visitors to the estate.
